Bruch Violin Concerto No.1
In any list of LSSO favourites, Bruch’s violin concerto has to take its rightful place near the top. First performed by the LSSO with Rolf Wilson as soloist in 1964, the work was included in a De Montfort Hall concert conducted by Rudolf Schwarz in May that year. It was then taken up by a succession of LSSO violinists right through to Eric Pinkett’s retirement in 1976. The LSSO reunion orchestra that assembled at Guthlaxton in May 1998 was led by Rolf Wilson and the concert included his performance of the first two movements of the concerto, some 34 years on from his collaboration with Schwarz in 1964. The sound clip, taken from the slow movement of the Bruch, was recorded at the 1998 concert.
