Candide Overture
The orchestra’s repertoire in 1968 featured two overtures - Semiramide by Rossini and Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. The Rossini never sounded very polished and Norman Del Mar dropped it from the scheduled programme for the tour of Austria that year and replaced it with Candide. It was performed at the Fairfield Hall prior to the tour and also featured in the television programme How It Is from BBC Lime Grove Studios. The piece was also included in the reunion concert at Guthlaxton in 1998 from which the sound clip is taken.
