Bert Neale and the Military Band

Over the years many LSSO concerts and other less formal occasions such as Friends of the CSM garden parties featured performances by the wind and brass sections of the orchestra under the guidance of Bert Neale. One of life’s true characters, Bert was a military man in the best sense of the word and not only did he conduct the military band, he also produced a number of his own arrangements for it. Many pieces from the band’s repertoire immediately come to mind: The Three Bears, Hootenanny, Life Divine, Buglers Holiday, Timpat and Standard of St. George. Only one brief example of Bert’s conducting has been traced and that is the sound clip included here, a short excerpt from Alford’s The Two Imps recorded at a Hinckley Grammar School concert in 1964.
