The orchestra and Yale University

Richard Warren, curator of the Yale sound archives with specific responsibility for the Charles Ives collection, expressed an interest in the lsso and was sent a copy of the Time to Remember video and a CD of Ives’ Circus Band and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue from the 1970 Cheltenham Festival. Both of these are now in the Yale archives.

Two quotes from Richard:

“The performance of Circus Band is a whole circus in itself…communicates more fun than any other version…simply amazing. Rhapsody in Blue reaches the same sort of plane. The swing, the sense of improvisation…makes the piece sound brand new.”

“I’ve viewed the whole tape. It’s extremely effective and moving. I’d heard of the orchestra but to actually see Tippett working with the group and to hear them producing a valid musical performance of Putnam’s Camp (quite a feat for any orchestra) as well as other works is quite an experience. The whole film gives one hope for the future of music. Thank you so much for sending it!”
